NDL and MH lamps

The most powerful light sources for indoor cultivation are metal halide lamps and high-pressure sodium lamps. They are available with 150W, 250W, 400W, 600W and 1000W. A ballast with the appropriate wattage is needed to operate them. The various manufacturers (Philips, Osram, Sylvania, Agrolite, etc.) have significantly developed the lamps in recent years and additionally optimised the spectrum for plants. Metal halide lamps (MH lamps) are mainly used for cuttings, seedlings and in the growth phase because of their predominantly blue light spectrum. The service life of MH lamps averages 11,000 hours, and most growers replace MH lamps after one year of use. High-pressure sodium lamps (also called HPS lamps) are mainly used for the flowering phase and have a red-yellow light spectrum. HPS lamps produce an orange-reddish light like the autumn sun. Their average life is 25,000 hours, so they are usually replaced after 18-24 months. In addition, lamps with a dual spectrum, which produce both blue and red light, are used for indoor cultivation. These bulbs produce very good results and are therefore used by many growers for both phases. They also have a lifespan of 18-24 months on average.
