Hydroponics, Aeroponics, Aquaponics - Part 8: NFT

The NFT (nutrient film flow technique) is a recirculating hydroponic system. The plants are usually grown in Rock wool cubes or more rarely in Hydrocorrels on a special NFT table or in troughs. A thin film of nutrient solution constantly runs over the table and washes around the roots. The plants are thus constantly supplied with water and nutrients and large parts of them hang in the air and can absorb plenty of oxygen. This ensures an optimal nutrient-oxygen ratio, which is a problem with many other forms of cultivation. With NFT, all three important basic needs for healthy plant growth are satisfied at the same time, resulting in extremely vigorous growth and maximum yields. The disadvantage is the lack of water storage by the medium. What is desirable on the one hand, is a huge problem on the other hand, should the nutrient solution supply fail. Many growers have already lost all their plants because the pump failed.

Structure NFT

Ein NFT-System besteht aus einem NFT-Tisch und einem Vorratstank. Die Nährlösung wird durch eine Pumpe auf eine Seite des Tisches befördert, läuft dann als dünner Film zur anderen Seite und von dort aus wieder zurück in den Tank. Auf dem NFT-Tisch wird ein Wurzelvlies ausgelegt und darauf die Pflanzen gestellt. Das Vlies muss anschliessend mit einer Anti-Algen-Folie lichtdicht abgedeckt werden. Es darf auf keinen Fall Licht auf den Wurzelbereich fallen. Dies würde zu Algenbefall führen, was den Pflanzen wertvolle Nährstoffe raubt und sie auch anfälliger für Krankheiten werden lässt. Das Wurzelvlies ist am Anfang nur wenige mm dick, im Laufe des Grows entwickelt sich bei guten Bedingungen ein mehrere Zentimeter dickes Wurzelwerk. Es ist darauf zu achten, dass der Wasserfilm gleichmässig über den Tisch fließt, es dürfen sich keine „Pfützen“ und keine trockenen Stellen bilden. Die Fliessgeschwindigkeit sollte auch nicht zu hoch sein, es hat sich ein Gefälle des Tisches von 2-3% bewährt. Natürlich müseen auch bei NFT der pH-Wert und EC-Wert regelmäßig überprüft werden. Die Nährlösung sollte außerdem einmal wöchentlich gewechselt und das System nach jedem Durchgang gründlich gereinigt und mit Chlor- bzw. Wasserstoffperoxidlösung gespült werden.

NFT is one of the most effective cultivation methods available. Compared to other systems, it is cheaper to purchase and also well suited for newcomers to hydroponics.
