How can I control the climate in the growroom?

Climate control in the growroom, cannabis cultivation

The most important thing for a successful indoor grow is the right lighting and an optimal climate in the grow room. Here you can find more on the topic Correct lighting of cannabis plants. The climate is influenced by the temperature, humidity and fresh air supply, so we can adjust these parameters to get the best results.

A constant supply of fresh air must be guaranteed, as the plants need a lot of CO2 (see Increase yields with CO2 and O2) and if there is no air movement, there is also a risk of mould. The perfect parameters for cannabis are a constant temperature of 21-24°C and a humidity of about 60% during the growth phase and 40% during flowering. In the growroom, the lamp heats the air, so it makes sense to run your lights at night, especially in summer when it gets very warm during the day. Attics in particular tend to get very hot in summer. Therefore, you should choose a suitable room in which the temperature remains as constant as possible, in order to convert it into a growroom or to set up your HOMEbox set up in it. Otherwise, sometimes the only option is to insulate or to use heaters and air conditioners, which, however, pushes up the electricity costs.

Digital Hygro-ThermometerThe temperature and humidity should be constantly checked with a Thermometer and a Hygrometer be controlled. Digital or analogue devices that have a minimum and maximum display are best suited. The lowest temperatures prevail when the lamp is off. At the same time, the humidity rises with the lower temperatures. With a few technical aids, these can be kept constant, which enables optimal growth and perfect, mould-free harvests.

Controlling the temperature via the fan

Prima Klima incl GSE Controller

The temperature control can be done via the fan if it is sufficiently dimensioned, i.e. that it does not have to run at main load for the required air exchange in the growroom. (You can find out more about the fan dimensioning in here). The fan is controlled via a climate controller or the controller is already built into the fan, as is the case with the temperature-controlled Prima Klima fan.

The minimum speed of the fan as well as the desired temperature (21-24°C is optimal for cannabis, as described above) can then be set on the climate controller. The minimum speed controls the fan in continuous operation, i.e. it is set so that the necessary air exchange takes place. As soon as the temperature becomes higher than the set value, the controller runs the fan at full power until the temperature has fallen below the reference value again. Then the fan runs again at the minimum speed until the temperature becomes too high again.
Air Cool Reflector Set

Unfortunately, temperature control via the fan is only possible if the air flowing in can also cool down the growroom. If the temperature outside the growroom is already higher than the desired one, only air conditioners that cool down the air can help. Another alternative is to use a Fan for the supply air and draw it in from a cool room such as the cellar. The lamp generates a lot of heat in the growroom. What can still be quite pleasant in winter presents the grower with great challenges in summer. The remedy is a reflector that is connected to the exhaust air, such as the Air Cool Reflector or a Cool-Tube.
If it is too cold in the growroom in winter, the fan must never be turned off. Otherwise the plants would not receive the necessary CO2 and the risk of mould would be too high. The same applies to the night. If the temperatures are too low, you can place a radiator with a thermostat in the growroom or heat the room from which the supply air comes.

Temperature controller for fan:

The GSE temperature controller is a temperature-dependent speed controller for ventilated rooms with an extract air fan. The fan controller keeps the room temperature constant and also prevents the fan from falling below the set minimum speed. The GSE climate controller is easy to operate. The desired temperature and minimum speed of the fan are simply set on two knobs.

In addition to the GSE temperature controller for the extract air, this controller has an additional connection for the supply air fan, so both can be controlled. The controller is a complete unit and is ready for use. The exhaust air is plugged in on the left and the supply air on the right.

Humidity control

Grow, Cultivation ControlA speed regulator or climate controller can be used to control the fan speed, i.e. how much air is extracted, as already described above. This can also be used to control the humidity of the grow room. Per faster the fan runs, the more exhaust air it produces and the lower the humidity becomes. If the humidity is too high, the fan must be turned up, if it is too low, it should run slower (however, as already mentioned above, there must always be a sufficient exchange of air! Optimal control of humidity and temperature is provided by the GSE climate controller with temperature, humidity and vacuum control. All parameters can be set there and perfect control is guaranteed.

Often, the humidity in the growroom is too low, in which case you should use a Humidifier should be used. This can be operated via a Hygrostat which is used to set the desired humidity and regulate the humidifier.

The correct control of the climate in the growroom is not a big deal with a little experience and with time you will also learn which values mean the absolute optimum for which variety. But with 21-24°C and 40-60% humidity you are definitely in the green zone.

Really good tips, I'm really very enthusiastic, but I still have a small question:
Does a climate control system like this run automatically or do I have to keep an eye on it all the time?

Thanks again for the really good reports
