The correct dosage for cannabis prescriptions
Cannabis can be consumed in a variety of ways. It can either be smoked classically in a joint, pipe or bong, vaporised, ingested as a topping through the skin or eaten or drunk in cannabis-enriched food. While the effect of smoking or vaporising is quite rapid, it takes much longer when ingested via food. Therefore, an exact dosage of the cannabinoid THC is very important when baking or cooking to avoid undesired overdoses, so that the high is fun, enjoyable and can unfold its medicinal effects without causing discomfort, panic, etc.
When baking and cooking with cannabis, you should think about the right strain beforehand. If you want to bake space cookies for the next party, a stimulating sativa might be a better choice than a calming indica. To determine the THC (or CBD) content of your Cookies, you need to know the content of the weed you are using, then it is easy to calculate. This way you know later how you reacted to a certain amount of THC and can adjust it accordingly next time.
Calculation example:
Suppose you bake 40 cookies and use 20g of weed with a THC content of 15% for the butter.
- The weed has a weight of 20,000mg (1g=1000mg). It contains 0.15 * 20,000mg = 3000mg THC
- Accordingly, each individual biscuit has a THC content of 3000mg / 40 = 75mg THC.
For all those who only understand this example: You calculate the THC content of the weed used by multiplying its weight in mg (20,000mg in the example) by the percentage of THC. In our example, 0.15 would be 15%. 0.2 would be 20%, 0.25 would be 25% and so on. Now you only have to divide the calculated total content of the weed by the number of cookies (40 in the example) and you know how many mg of THC you ingest with each cookie.

How high should the dosage be per intake/meal?

Those who have no experience with cannabis-enriched foods are well advised to use a dosage of 5-10mg per serving. Depending on tolerance, personal taste and medical use, this dosage can possibly be increased slowly.
What is there to consider when dosing cannabis?
- Cannabis plants and cannabis strains are not the same. Different strains have different THC content and the same strains from even the same breeder and the same grow can have different THC content. The cannabinoid profile of each plant is unique.
- If you are cooking with a new strain, you should test and assess the effect and strength of the cannabis used beforehand.
- In general, it is said that larger people also need a higher dosage. Everyone is different in terms of metabolism and tolerance, so everyone reacts differently to cannabis. I know many people who are very slim and yet have a high marijuana tolerance level.
- When cannabis-infused edibles are consumed on an empty stomach, the effect sets in faster and becomes deeper.
- Additional alcohol consumption can intensify the effects of cannabis in an unattractive way, making it more unpredictable and producing unpleasant effects.
What if the cannabis dose is too high?

People handling cannabis prescriptions for the first time can more easily get too strong a dose. This is quite easy. It takes 1.5 hours or more for the full effect of eaten marijuana to show. If it is not eaten on an empty stomach, it can even take up to 3 hours. This is why some people think it doesn't work and add more after eating. Then, when the effect sets in, it turns out that it was far too much.
If this happens to you or someone you know, it is important not to panic. It is not possible to take a threatening dose of cannabis. This is important to note.
This is what the World Health Organisation says about this issue:
"There are no documented cases of overdose deaths attributable to cannabis, and the estimated lethal dose for humans extrapolated from animal studies is so high that it cannot be reached by users."
So an overdose of marijuana can never kill you, but an overdose can cause unpleasant effects such as anxiety, panic, paranoia, chills, dizziness. Coordination may also be affected or speech may be more difficult. Some people may experience an acceleration of the heart rate, which in turn may increase panic. Therefore, one should refrain from using heavy machinery or driving a car if one has ingested cannabis infused meals.
The best thing to do when overdosing on cannabis is to sleep it off. At first, many people feel active (anxious) and after a while the effect changes into relaxation and, in case of overdose, tiredness. After a few hours of sleep, everything is as before, there is no hangover like with alcohol.
