Can the cannabinoid CBG prevent and even cure bowel cancer?

Cannabis and colorectal cancer, CBG in colorectal cancer, cannbiinoids in medicine

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers and is the third most common cancer as well as the second leading cause of cancer death. However, new data now gives hope that a large majority of these patients could be treated and possibly cured with a compound in marijuana, namely the cannabinoid cannabigerol (CBG). Cannabigerol is responsible for many medicinal effects in cannabis and works behind the scenes, so to speak. THC, CBD and other cannabinoids start out as cannabigerol, CBG is therefore often referred to as the stem of these cannabinoids. CBG is quickly converted into the other cannabinoids in the cannabis plant with the help of enzymes, which explains the low concentration in most strains.

Although the cannabinoid CBG has received less attention than other cannabinoids such as THC and CBD, its non-psychoactive and medicinal properties in alleviating the symptoms of glaucoma and irritable bowel syndrome have been well described. In a recent study by the National Institute of Health (USA) of all places, which in the past has mainly led studies and research to discover the negative properties of cannabis, it has now been found that cannabigerol can effectively slow down the progression of colon cancer.

The study, published in a recent issue of the journal Oxford Carcinogenesis, describes the effects of cannabigerol on the progression of colon cancer cell development. Researchers found that when tested on animals, CBG inhibited the growth of xenograft tumours as well as chemically-induced colon carcinogenesis. CBG impedes colorectal cancer progression in vivo and selectively blocks the growth of colorectal cancer cells, according to the researchers.

Cannabigerol, medicinal effects

It is worth noting that cannabigerol (CBG) is found even more in strains of industrial hemp than in marijuana with psychoactive properties. Hemp can contain very high levels of CBG with hardly any THC levels of 0.001%. Cannabigerol (CBG) is an unrecorded substance in the United Nations Anti-Drug Treaty under the 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances. Researchers suspect a dual function of cannabigerol in both colon cancer prevention and treatment and cure. This could be good news and salvation for many thousands of people who die of (colorectal) cancer every year.

More research is definitely needed to determine the true potential of CBG and explore how to use it effectively. But it is good to hear that other compounds in marijuana besides THC and CBD can help patients, even without their knowledge. Remember, without CBG, most other cannabinoids would not exist.

Because of the newly discovered uses of CBG, breeders are now starting to develop cannabis strains that are particularly high in CBG. Cannagetica by Cannamed is a strain with an exceptionally high CBG content. Medical cannabis strains with a high CBG content offer a much more balanced effect that forms a therapeutically very valuable synergy with the other cannabinoids.
