How to control the medicinal and psychoactive effects of cannabis with temperature control

Temperature control vaporizer, temperature when vaporizing, medical cannabis, use

Each cannabinoid has a different boiling point (= the temperature at which the cannabinoids dissolve from the plant material and turn into a gaseous state). Besides the cannabinoids, cannabis also contains terpenes (terpenoids) as effective and medicinal components. The terpenes are also responsible for the wonderful aroma of the cannabis plants. Scientists have found out that not only THC and CBD alone explain the psychoactive effects of individual strains. The different cannabinoids have numerous different medicinal effects, but also have a decisive influence on the respective high of a particular strain.

It is assumed that the terpenes play a similarly decisive role in the high as THC and CBD. And each terpene has a different boiling point. When using a vaporizer with digital control, such as the Volcano Digit or Extreme Qit is possible to set the exact temperature at which the marijuana should be vaporised and accordingly which cannabinoids and terpenes should pass into the vapour and have priority effect.

Because all cannabinoids and terpenes have a different boiling point, if the same cannabis is vaporised at 2 different temperatures, 2 different effects/experiences will occur. The lower the temperature used to vaporise, the less active compounds reach their boiling point and contribute to the high accordingly.

In the case of cannabis, 2 major areas of effect can be distinguished:

"Day High"/Stimulating High:

Vaporising at low temperatures usually produces a mental and energetic high that is less or hardly physical. The THC is usually released completely and possibly some CBD, only a few/none of the other cannabinoids and terpenoids with a higher boiling point are released. There is only a slight development of the aroma.

"Night high"/body high:

In the evening, the cannabis can be vaporised at higher temperatures to get more of the analgesic and sedative effects. At higher temperatures, more cannabinoids and terpenoids are released, such as the terpene linalool or THCV (if present in the strain). At the same time, more aromas and an intense smell are released.

Tips for temperature control when vaporising

  • It is best to use grass that has been bred, this is optimal for the vaporizer.
  • Generally: Sativas are more stimulating and invigorating, mental - Indicas are more calming, physical
  • For each variety and even plant, the content of cannabinoids and terpenes varies, as does their composition of active components.
  • The grass should be well and properly dried
  • It always depends on personal preferences and the individual physical condition how cannabinoids, their combination as well as individual strains have a medicinal and also psychoactive effect.

How can you specifically highlight the cannabinoids CBD (or also CBN)?

Cannabinoids and temperature

This is an example of possible temperatures:

Sample Strain (Type)

Daytime vaporizer temperature

Night Vaporizer Temperature

Sativas 178°C 190°C
Sativa dominant 190°C 195°C
Indica dominant 195°C 202°C
Indica 202°C 208°C

All values regarding boiling points refer to the data and years of cannabinoid research by Dr. Ethan Russo (USA) and John M. Mc Partland (UK), who have published them several times, including in their book "Cannabis Therapeutics in HIV/AIDS".

By controlling the temperature during vaporisation, you can emphasise and highlight desired medicinal effects and at the same time play and experiment with the psychoactive effect. It is also possible to vape the same weed twice at different temperatures and thus experience 2 different effects. It remains exciting to hear your personal experience 😉
