What is Skunk?

skunk, what is skunk, cannabis strains, seedshop

Even today, Skunk is often used as a benchmark when judging the quality of new strains, as it has the reputation of being an extremely strong weed. In some countries, such as England, the term skunk is not only used for a particular strain, but is a general term for high-quality weed of unknown origin. Newspaper articles from the UK sometimes state that users of skunk are 7 times more likely to suffer psychosis than "normal" cannabis users (see e.g. here). So there are various myths and stories surrounding the "skunk", so we want to clarify:

What is Skunk?

Skunk is an independent cannabis strain that has its origins in the 1970s. To this day, every grower associates excellent quality with this strain, which delivers an excellent high as well as being a robust and easy-to-grow cannabis strain. Skunk produces good yields and can be grown indoors, outdoors and in the greenhouse and has a very intense, sometimes pungent smell, which gave it its name. It is a strain that is excellent for novice growers as it is generous with mistakes and also not very susceptible.

Skunk#1 by Dutch PassionSkunk originated in the Netherlands at the end of the 70s. The seed banks and breeders, who were quite new at the time, wanted to develop a variety that was very robust and potent, with only a few leaves in the flowers, so that a quick harvest was possible. For this purpose, selected sativas were crossed with indicas, so Skunk is more or less the first hybrid of professional cannabis breeding. Skunk was bred from the landraces Columbian Gold (Sativa), Mexican Acapulco Gold (Sativa) and Afghani (Indica).

The first and then already breeding breeders, Sensi Seeds and Dutch Passion each weighted their selection contrarily, so that Sensi Seeds Skunk #1 is indica dominant, while Dutch Passion's Skunk #1 and Skunk #11 each carry more sativa genes. What they have in common is the enormous potency and the union of the sativa and indica in their effect. A good Skunk makes you neither tired nor hectic, but lets you relax and still stimulates your mind. Typical Skunk. Meanwhile, Skunk is available from many seed banks, in the following three of the original ones:
