SOG cultivation with Medical Grapefruit by Cannamed

In the following we describe a Sea-Of-Green cultivation with Cannamed's Medical Grapefruit.

 Equipment used/growroom

The grow took place on 2.30 x 1.70cm. Two lamps were used in Adjust-A-Wing reflectors with Lumatek 600W ballast, dimmed to 400W during the growth phase (ballast can be switched to 4 levels). The light sources used were 2 Lumatek 600W Dual during the vegetation phase and Philips SON-T Pia during the flowering phase.

In the growroom, 2 Honeywell fans and a swivel fan were used to ensure sufficient air circulation, and the temperature was controlled via a GSE climate controller controller. The controller controls the fans for the supply and exhaust air and was set to 22°C. The temperature in the grow room was thus a relatively constant 23°C. The temperature in the grow room was thus a relatively constant 23°C.

Technique GrowTechnique Grow
For the exhaust air, a pipe fan with 800m³/h capacity was installed soundproofed in a box and operated with a corresponding activated carbon filter. The supply air was supplied with a Tube fan with 420m²/hwhich, like the exhaust air, was controlled via the air-conditioning controller and drew in fresh air from the adjacent room. Furthermore, a Ioniser used to eliminate existing fungal spores.

Technique GrowIrrigation was carried out with 2 automatic irrigation systems for 36 plants each. The cannabis plants were each placed in 2 ebb and flow soils with 100 x 110cm and two with 33 x 100cm ,so that 72 plants were grown on a total of just under 3m².

Technique GrowThe irrigation was operated as a recirculating system so that excess nutrient solution ran back into the tank from which the plants were watered. The tank was additionally equipped with a circulation pump and an aeration pump so that no algae formation took place and the nutrient solution was always enriched with sufficient oxygen.

Fertiliser and additives
The cannabis plants were grown on Canna Coco Professional Plus Canna's coco fertilizer system was chosen to feed the plants. The following components were used:

To regulate the pH value, we used Canna pH- and the plants were treated prophylactically with Killer Neem for the first 4 weeks.

Cuttings from the Medical Grapefruit

The mother grows under a ESL fitting with 4 x 55W in a 30l pot. She is watered automatically and fed with Canna Coco A+B, CannaBooster and irregularly with GHE Bio Essentials. The EC value is 1.3, the pH value is set to 5.8.

The cuttings were cut, treated with Clonex treated, placed in Rockwool cubes and placed in a mini greenhouse. You can find more about cutting cuttings here.

The cuttings were raised together with the mother so that they got enough light right away. This prevented the formation of fungi. The cuttings were regularly ventilated and the humidity in the greenhouse was between 75 and 80%.

67

After 12 days, the cuttings had formed enough roots to be planted in their pots. The substrate was Canna Coco mixed with perlites in a ratio of 80% coco and 20% perlite. The Pots pots had a size of 14 x 14 cm and a volume of 3.5l. From repotting onwards, the young plants were fed once a day with 140 ml of a nutrient solution consisting of Canna Rhizotonic, Canna A+B Coco, CannaZym with an EC value of 1.3 and 5.7 pH.

Start of the growth phase / move into the growroom

During the growth phase, the Lumatek ballasts were dimmed down to 400W and the reflectors were placed 50cm above the plants. During the 16-hour lighting phase, the temperature was 25°C and the humidity was 60%. During the dark phase, the temperature dropped to 22°C and the humidity rose to 70%.

The plants were sprayed with Delta Nueve 5 days before and after repotting (5ml/litre water). Until the 3rd week of flowering, the nutrient amount was kept the same and watered 2x daily with 120ml per plant. The nutrient solution had a pH of 5.8 and 1.4 EC and consisted of the following ingredients per litre:

  • 2ml Canna Rhizotonic
  • 2ml CannaZym
  • 3ml GHE Bio Essentials
  • 1ml each Canna Calcium and Magnesium
  • Canna A+B until EC 1.4 has been reached

Day 12 Growth phase:

The plants showed slight signs of overfertilisation, so the EC value was lowered to 1.2. The plants developed very evenly, watering was increased to 2x 160ml daily during this phase.

Day 18 Growth phase

The Medical Grapefruit plants are developing magnificently and are slowly taking up the available space. In order to achieve more effective growth and better use of light, the plants were pruned slightly after 18 days of growth and the lower, thin shoots were removed. The plants had reached a height of 30 cm after just under 3 weeks. After pruning, they were sprayed again with Delta Nueve (6ml per 1l water).

Day 23 - Initiation of flowering

The plants grew very homogeneously and had reached a height of between 34 and 37 cm after 23 days. Now the lighting was turned down to 12 hours and thus the flowering was initiated. The ballast was also set to 600W, but the first week of flowering was still lit with the Lumatek Dual lamp.

After 6 days of flowering, the Dual bulbs were replaced by two Philips Son-T Pia. This caused the plants to stretch to a certain extent, which gave them another boost due to the lower blue content of the bulb. The final height of the Medical Grapefruit at harvest was between 87 and 94 cm. From the beginning of the flowering phase, the nutrient solution with Canna Rhizotonic, Canna A+B Coco, CannaZym and CannaBoost with an EC value of 1.3 and 5.8 pH. The EC value was increased to 1.6 during the first 3 weeks. 5 days after the beginning of flowering, the leaves and stems of the Medical Grapefruit plants were sprayed with Delta Nueve for the last time.

Flowering day 18:

The flowers started to develop and became more compact. The stretching of the plants stopped in this phase and from the 21st day of flowering the EC value was increased to 1.7 and in addition to the components Canna PK 13/14 was used for a fortnight.

28th flowering day:

The flowers became denser and more compact and the first resin glands were visible to the naked eye. The smell became more intense, so the activated carbon filter had to work hard. The whole growroom had a fruity, sour aroma. The nutrient content of the nutrient solution was maintained, the plants were meanwhile watered 4 times a day with 200ml nutrient solution and EC 1.8.

Flowering day 35:

The Medical Grapefruit is now in full bloom and gets a nutrient solution with Canna Coco A+B, CannaBoost and CannaZym with an EC value of 1.9. This nutrient level will be maintained for the next 2 weeks.

In the picture below you can clearly see how the plants have stretched more under the left lamp. This is because it hung 10 cm higher than the right one during the growth phase.

Flowering day 45:

The increased flowering is at its peak. The buds are increasing in volume and the trichomes are getting bigger and swelling. The EC value is now 1.7 and no more Canna PK 13/14 is used.

From the 49th day of flowering, the Medical Grapefruit plants were flushed and only CannaZym and CannaFlush were used for irrigation.

Flowering day 57:

From the 57th day of flowering, only pure water pH 5.8 was used for rinsing, so that all salts could be dissolved and broken down by the plant. This resulted in a pure, natural aroma in the dried weed without the taste of fertiliser residues.

Flowering day 64 - Harvest Medical Grapefruit:

31 32

After 64 days of flowering, 67 medical grapefruit plants were harvested. They had a final height of 87 to 94 cm. After manicuring, they were hung in a drynet to dry.

Medical Grapefruit, Harvest

The 67 medical grapefruit had a weight of 1287g when dried, so that each yielded an average of 19.21g. The yield was 1.07g/w. The weed had a very fruity aroma with a slight mint undertone. The effect was stimulating and mood-lifting with slight psychedelic effects.
