Crohn's disease and cannabis

In a clinical experiment in Israel, researchers investigated the anti-inflammatory effect of cannabis in connection with Crohn's disease. Crohn's disease is an immunodeficiency disorder in which the gastrointestinal tract is chronically inflamed and symptoms include abdominal pain, bloody diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, weight loss and bouts of fever.

Crohn's disease cannot be cured to date, so medicine aims to reduce the symptoms and thus achieve regression of the disease. In classical medicine, this is done by changing the diet, using steroids and even surgically removing affected areas of the digestive tract. Many people who treat themselves with marijuana report great success in treating this insidious disease.

A connection between the anti-inflammatory effect of cannabis and the relief of symptoms seemed to be given, so that researchers at the Meir Medical Center in Tel Aviv (Israel) looked into this topic in more detail and examined it in a clinical study. In this study, 11 out of 21 patients in the study group were administered cannabis twice a day, while the other part received a placebo. After two months of treatment with marijuana, 5 participants showed a complete regression of symptoms and a clinical response was recorded in 90% of the cases. They published their results in the journal "Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology" and encourage further studies on the anti-inflammatory properties of cannabis, especially when administered in a form other than smoking.

It can be assumed that cannabis has the same anti-inflammatory effect on Crohn's disease as it does on arthritis, cirrhosis and rheumatism, for which the effectiveness of marijuana has already been proven several times in extensive studies. The question for future studies is more about the right form of administration. Ingestion through tinctures and also vaporised inhalation through a vaporizer seem to be the most suitable methods of ingestion, as they contain the complete spectrum of effects without the negative aspects of combustion.

A cannabis strain that is now used worldwide for Crohn's disease is Big Juana by Cannamed.
