Cannabis and chronic pain

Cannabis for pain, medical cannabis for chronic pain, pain treatment with marijuana

Chronic pain is a common condition and often pushes sufferers to their limits. People with chronic nerve pain have few treatment options: Opioids, anticonvulsants, antidepressants and local anesthetics are available. However, the effectiveness of the substances varies. In addition, they all trigger undesirable side effects. More and more patients and also doctors are therefore turning to cannabis as an alternative or support for pain treatment with traditional medications. Scientific studies have shown that taking cannabinoids in tablet form relieved pain in most patients, or significantly reduced doses of opioids.

As early as 1999, the Institute of Medicine found THC to be as pain-relieving as codeine, but without the side effects such as hallucination, problems urinating, and increased or irregular heartbeat that occur with opioids.

In a 2000 study, cannabis significantly relieved pain in 80% of participating patients, allowing them to avoid high doses of opioids. A 2003 case study of a 47-year-old pain patient showed that there was improvement in pain when low-dose opioids were taken together with cannabis, compared to treatment with high doses of opioids.

Canadian scientists at McGill University now investigated the effect of cannabis on chronic pain when smoked in a study. They divided the 21 participants, who all suffered from chronic nerve pain, into 4 groups. Three groups smoked 25 milligrams of cannabis with varying levels of THC three times per day for 5 days. The 4th group also smoked, but no cannabis was included with them. The patients who used cannabis reported that their pain and sleep improved and anxiety and depression decreased. The best results were achieved with high doses of THC.

So medical cannabis is able to relieve chronic pain and improve disease management tremendously. Meanwhile, more and more doctors are calling for the use of marijuana in pain management, as it is the most effective treatment for chronic neuropathic pain (nerve pain), opioids are of little or no help for this type of pain.

For the treatment of chronic pain are suitable especially Indicasorten with a very high THC content, which both relieve pain and have a muscle-relaxing effect. Whether a pain patient resorts to cannabis alone or takes it in conjunction with other chemical medications depends on the type and severity of the condition. It is therefore important for patients to find a doctor who is familiar with the treatment methods using medical cannabis in order to find a medication and disease management that is suitable for them.
