ADHD and cannabis

ADHD cannabis, medical cannabis information, mecdical marijuana research

For some time now, there have been reports that medical marijuana helps in the treatment of symptoms of ADHD (=Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) or ADD and achieves good results. The great advantage is that medical cannabis helps ADHD patients in a natural way and has no side effects, unlike the medicines that are otherwise used. ADHD often manifests itself through inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity and a mixture of all. Although ADHD is mainly diagnosed and treated in children, it has been proven that adults can also be affected.

Adults with ADHD or ADD often tend to forget things easily, are easily distracted and often find it difficult to concentrate on a task for a long time. The classic treatment for the disorder is with stimulants such as Ritalin, Strattera, Vyvance, etc. These drugs act on the nervous system and prevent the reuptake of noradrenalin and dopamine (= important neurotransmitters in the brain). Thus, these drugs not only increase concentration and alertness, but are also often accompanied by undesirable side effects such as insomnia, decrease in appetite, nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, dizziness or even anxiety and irritability.

Because many patients want to avoid these side effects, the medical use of cannabis for ADHD or ADD has proven itself, especially in Colorado and California, but also in Israel, for example, and is increasingly recognised as an alternative in the treatment of symptoms. Numerous US studies have already been able to show the positive effect on the disease and prove that marijuana helps to alleviate the symptoms. Cannabis supports sleep disorders, can sedate and relax. In addition, it stimulates the appetite instead of inhibiting it like Ritalin and therefore makes patients feel healthier. Marijuana can also have a positive effect on anxiety and impulsivity. Patients treated with cannabis report feeling calmer and better able to concentrate on and complete tasks.

In animal experiments with rats, it could be shown that there were drastic improvements in the symptoms when cannabis was used medicinally. (By the way, self-experiments have led to the same result 😉 ) Due to the positive properties in connection with the disease, more and more doctors in the USA are therefore deciding to recommend cannabis to their patients for treatment and more and more sufferers in Europe are also using this natural medicine. Unfortunately, the use of medical marijuana in Europe has either not yet been made accessible to these patient groups or not yet sufficiently so. In many countries, marijuana is still denied to patients as a medicine and its use is considered illegal. An adaptation to current research and scientific results is absolutely necessary. In many countries, there are tendencies in the right direction, so that in the future cannabis will increasingly be seen for what it is, namely a highly effective and extremely helpful and above all important medicinal plant for humans.
