Autoflowering varieties: What is it and what do you have to keep in mind?

Autoflowering cannabis strains effortlessly deliver solid, high-quality yields of potent weed. When planted outdoors, they can produce two or more harvests in one summer.
Automatic cannabis strains are nothing new. Ruderalis, a special type of cannabis, has been around for thousands of years and has always been autoflowering, but has only a small amount of psychotropic cannabinoids. Advances in cannabis breeding have allowed the potency and flavour of indica and sativa to be combined with ruderalis. This has resulted in automatic (autoflowering) cannabis strains with tremendous power and potency.
Many autoflowering strains remain smaller and also more manageable than normal strains. However, there are now also some varieties that reach a stately height and even produce yields nearly as large as normal plants. For example the Afghan Express from Positronics, which grows up to 2m high outdoors or the Auto Heavy Bud from Advanced Seeds, which grows up to 1.5m tall outdoors and 90cm indoors.

Many great strains and cannabis legends like Jack Herer, White Widow & Co. are now available as autoflowering variations from different seed banks: Auto White Widow from Dutch Passion, Northern Lights Automatic from Sensi Seeds, Auto Jack from Paradise Seeds...

At this point, we have to mention the outstanding autoflowering strain Pandorra from Paradise Seeds, which convinces with high potency and power. It has up to 18% THC and can yield huge, fat yields of up to 450g per m² indoors (hold on!). With that, she can easily stand next to the normal varieties.

Many growers now choose autoflowering / automatic seeds when it comes to continuously growing cannabis indoors. These fast-growing and autoflowering strains, which only take about 10 weeks from germination to harvest, are ideal for securing your own weed needs on a permanent basis. Unlike indoor growing with regular or feminised seeds or cuttings, autoflowering plants do not require separate growing and flowering rooms. Autoflowering plants can grow and flower in the same light cycle, so they are particularly suitable for people who don't have much space to grow. Once a plant has been harvested (or removed for other reasons), you can immediately plant a new one in its place. This way, the growroom is always full, the space is completely utilised and new buds are constantly produced.

Tips for growing autoflowering varieties

  • As already mentioned above, autoflowering strains do not need a time change. The best results are achieved with 18/6 lighting, i.e. 18 hours of light per day. Shortening the light cycle during the flowering phase to 12/12, as with "normal" cannabis plants, has proven to be bad, as this leads to considerably lower yields!
  • They grow equally well on all growing mediums, when growing on soil it is best to plant the autoflowering plants in 6l pots, smaller pots will result in lower yields. As autoflowering plants have a large headbud and few side branches, it is ideal to grow them as Sea of Green (SoG). This will give you the best results.
  • As automatic varieties have a very fast and vigorous growth, they consume a lot of nutrients. You should start fertilising after about 2 weeks and give them a little longer growth fertiliser than is the case with "normal" ones, i.e. only switch to flowering fertiliser when they start to flower fully and, of course, stop and rinse again in good time before harvesting. This means roughly:

2 weeks growth -> 2 weeks growth fertiliser -> 4 weeks flowering fertiliser -> 2 weeks rinse -> enjoy

  • When choosing the light source, the same has to be considered as with normal cannabis plants. During growth, the plants need more blue-white light, and during the flowering phase they need more red light. This is why dual light sources are ideal for use in a small grow box. This way you can realise both, the growth and the flowering phase, at the same time in your growroom. Many growers use Energy saving lamps (ESL) or LEDs for autoflowering grows. In contrast to sodium vapour lamps, they have the advantage of emitting almost no heat and therefore do not heat up the small room excessively.

It would be nice if you could take part in the little survey, after all I want to write about topics that interest you 😉.

In this sense, gracias, best regards and see you in the days to come,
