Strainspecial Northern Lights: one of the great breeding lines

Northern Lights, legendary cannabis strain

The original Northern Lights is one of the 3 fundamental cannabis strains that have influenced and shaped the global cannabis culture over the past decades. Since its inception, the original Northern Lights (Sensi Seeds) has dominated the various Cannabis Cups, winning award after award, even leading to several requests to remove it from competition to give other strains a chance at a title.

Northern Lights is one of the most legendary cannabis strains around. It has been around for over 30 years and still enjoys great popularity among growers and smokers all over the world. As befits a legend, there are many myths surrounding the origin and development of this strain. Originally, it was a pure Indica that originated in the USA. Some sources claim it was bred in California, while most stories are about a man called "The Indian" who grew cannabis near Seattle.

Later, she got a few more sativa genes from a Thai and Northern Lights in its current form was born. In 1985 Nevil Schoenmakers brought Northern Lights to Europe in the form of 11 female cuttings. He numbered them and began to breed with them. The most famous of these is undoubtedly NL #5. Nevil Schoenmakers, the founder of the first Dutch seedbank, later renamed Sensi Seeds, started breeding and crossing with the different Northern Lights lines and a variety of different Northern Lights strains developed.

The properties of Northern Lights

Northern Lights is known for producing very resinous, dense, tight buds that grow both on the main stem and on the many strong side shoots. The flowering time of Northern Lights is under 60 days due to the very dense and compact buds, it tends to mold towards the end of the flowering phase, especially if the fat buses are not sufficiently ventilated. Therefore, when growing indoors, make sure there is sufficient ventilation and enough fans. Low humidity should be avoided. NL is ideal for producing bubble hash or BHO because of the excessive resin production.

The smell and taste of the Northern Lights varieties is less penetrating and intense than other Afghan Indicas. It has a balanced aroma composed of pine, earthy notes and a light honey flavour.

Its effect is physically very relaxing and calming, so it tends to be the weed of choice for evening and bedtime. Juan also likes it during the day 😉 It is one of the most important medical cannabis strains and has therefore been crossed into many medicinal cannabis strains. Its effect is excellent for the treatment of chronic pain, sleep support, panic attacks, anxiety disorders and depressive moods.

An original NL is available as Northern Lights by Sensi Seeds. It is also available as Ortega Indica by Duth Passion, Northern Light from Royal Queen Seeds and as Industrial Plant from Dinafem. In addition, it is now also available as an automatic variation, e.g. from Sensi Seeds or Royal Queen Seeds or the autoflowering Deimos from Buddha Seeds. Furthermore, Northern Lights has been crossed into many varieties, e.g. in the Shiva Skunk from Sensi Seed or the Jack Herer. Also the Super Silver Haze by Mr. Nice contains the genes of Northern Lights.

Northern Lights is a good choice for both novice and experienced growers looking for a fast, high-yielding strain with highly potent bud. It develops best in hydroponic systems, but can be grown almost as successfully on all other growing media. It tolerates plenty of nutrients, but phosophore (P) should be used very carefully because of its susceptibility to mould. In addition, a very good ventilation of the grow chamber and sufficient ventilation of the buds with fans must be ensured. Furthermore, the humidity must never exceed 50% and the buds must not be sprayed with moisture. If you pay attention to these few things, you can look forward to wonderful yields.

Keep it green,

Your Juan
