Purple cannabis strains, albinos and what colours say about disease and health

Purple strain, colourful cannabis strains, purple cannabis strains

The bright (light) green colour is the trademark of cannabis plants. Like all other plants, the cannabis plant expresses its state of health through the colour of its leaves and stems and shows corresponding colour variations depending on the circumstances. That is why the attentive gardener is immediately concerned when plants produce yellow, brown or even purple and blue colour, because this is often a sign of disease.

Colour changes in plants can be caused by a lack of nitrogen (yellow) or potassium (dark green and purple), a change in pH (in acidic conditions they tend to turn reddish, in alkaline conditions blue or purple) and then when the temperature is cool. With a constant cooler temperature, many cannabis strains tend to form different colours.

Phosphorus deficiency purple stems cannabis

Phosphorus deficiency, also purple stems can be a sign of nitrogen deficiency or phosphorus deficiency

Of course, colour changes should be kept in mind, because if they are due to health problems, the quality of the marijuana will later be lower than plants that have a healthy colour. However, this is not a theoretical principle that must apply in all cases. There are cannabis strains that show the most diverse colours and have a specific genetic predisposition to do so. In this case, the colour has nothing to do with any deficiency, over-fertilisation or other disease. These are simply cannabis beauties that glow in the most beautiful shades of red, blue and often purple.

The violet, purple varieties have their genetic origin in countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan. They owe their purple colouring to pigments called anthocyanins. At first, these varieties often still produce chlorophyll and are therefore green. As the flowering progresses and especially towards the end of the flowering period, they produce less chlorophyll and thus appear in the brightest colours. The drop in night temperature also plays a role in this for many varieties.

As coloured purple examples one can mention: the Blue Widow from Dinafemthe Pakistan Chitral Kush from Cannabiogen the , Sweet Purple from Paradise Seeds, Dark Devil Sweet Seeds, Red Purps Female Seeds, Buddha Purple Kush from Buddha Seeds, Purple Domina by Anesia Seeds.

The coloured cannabis strains now have the same strength and potency as all other strains. The old myth that purple marijuana is softer has been disproved many times. Besides purple strains, there are a number of strains that develop different shades of green, yellowish and reddish colours, thanks to pigments called carotenoids. Some cannabis strains turn greyish or even almost black due to their genetic characteristics.

Albinos in cannabis plants

Cannabis Albino

It happens that individual plants of certain cannabis varieties suddenly produce one or more completely white flowers or the plant is partially white or has spotted leaves. This looks beautiful, but otherwise has no further purpose or meaning. Even if these flowers are of the same quality as the green ones, the yield of white albino flowers will be much lower. Most of the time, the quality is also lower because these white flowers also produce less resin and lack the very thing they need to develop high potency, chlorophyll.

Albino cannabis, white buds

Albino Cannabis PlantsAlbino cannabis plants occur rather rarely. When this occurs, only individual flower or flower parts as well as parts of the plant are affected. A living, healthy and completely white cannabis albino plant cannot exist and does not exist, because the plant would die and could not feed itself in any way. Plants always need chlorophyll for nourishment, if this is completely missing it cannot live. These white flowers or partially white plants are due to a genetic defect, as a mutation. This is relatively normal, rare and occurs in nature, although there are also factors that can favour it. It has also been observed that Fading of flowers can occur if they are positioned too close to a very strong plant light (NDL or strong LED).
