Algae as a valuable fertiliser for cannabis plants

Algae cannabis cultivation

Seaweed and seaweed extracts are among the most original and oldest fertilizers. Near the sea, people have been using them for many hundreds of years. In cannabis cultivation, they provide an alternative, reliable and purely organic fertilizer. Algae-based fertilizers are becoming increasingly important in organic farming because of their many benefits. Algae are fished out at sea or collected from the beach. They are then thoroughly washed, dried and ground into meal, which is rich in potassium.

Marine algae occur in most of the world's oceans in shallow water areas (usually not deeper than 35 m) and in so-called water change zones. These are areas with frequently changing water levels. The west coast of Ireland, for example, is considered an excellent harvesting area favored by the Gulf Stream. Today, algae for the production of fertilizers are also specially cultivated and organically grown for certain plant species, e.g. cannabis.

Algae are highly resilient plants that can withstand extreme temperature differences and adapt excellently to their environmental conditions. Algae have no stems, leaves or roots. But unlike fungi, they are independent and capable of photosynthesis on their own. As organic, renewable fertilizers, they can make an important contribution to the maintenance of the ecosystem. In cannabis plants, they ensure that yields and, in general, the health of the plant are increased. They help improve the soil and act as biological stimulators for the plants.

Algae or algae fertilizers can be used for both outdoor and indoor growing and are highly recommended throughout the life cycle of cannabis plants from seedling to the end of flowering.

Algae fertilizers contain all the important macroelements, microelements, minor elements and trace elements that plants need. In addition, algae contain auxins and citokinene (both plant hormones), amino acids, vitamins, carbohydrates and chelating substances. However, not all seaweeds are the same. There are thousands of species of seaweed. Seaweeds can be single-celled organisms that float in the water or become plants up to 45 meters long.

The nutrient content depends on the type of algae and its growing conditions. Algae meal can be easily absorbed and utilized by cannabis plants. In addition, it stimulates the microorganisms in the soil, improved its structure and resistance of plants.

Algae fertilizer is available in liquid or granular form. In case of current nutrient deficiency, fertilizing the cannabis plants with algae acts as a kind of quick cure. The algae fertilizer can be added to the watering water or, as a rule, also used for leaf fertilization. When spraying leaves with algae solution, this also acts as a plant protection against spider mites and other soft-skinned insects and should also be sprayed on the undersides of the leaves. Insects are hindered and killed by the fibers and particles contained.

The best researched and most widely used marine alga to date is the so-called knotweed. This brown alga occurs mainly in the favorably temperate waters of the North Atlantic. Tide-dependent species such as Ascophyllum nodosum are exposed to special conditions. On the one hand they grow in cool salt water, but on the other hand they are exposed to hot solar radiation or freezing frost. In this context, the plants very strongly store active substances that help them to cope with the extreme environmental conditions and stress. Especially these ingredients are extracted in the production of algae preparations in the most gentle way possible.

Recent studies have shown that seaweed additionally contains active ingredients that promote improved functioning of the plant's own resistance mechanisms. Some specific seaweeds contain various biomolecules such as oligosaccharides (carbohydrates, multiple sugars). They have been shown to be able to activate the plant's natural defense mechanisms. This effect helps to avoid the use of chemical pesticides.

Algae fertilizers and extracts provide healthy and strong plants when growing cannabis

The ingredients of algae have a positive effect on cannabis growth

  • Some algae act as an activator for the natural defense mechanisms of the cannabis plant, thus causing a well-functioning immune system against typical diseases in marijuana plants.
  • the photosynthesis is optimized
  • Marine algae are like a kind of natural and very complex storehouse of useful biomolecules
  • contain all important macroelements, microelements, minor elements and very many trace elements
  • Algae preparations and extracts can be easily and quickly absorbed by the cannabis plant
  • improves soil structure and promotes the formation of mycorrhiza and various microorganisms
  • Cytokinin (= growth-increasing hormone) is contained, which facilitates the transport of nutrients into the cells
