After the little plant has come out of the soil, it starts to grow and loses the seed coat after a few days, if this has not already happened. The first pair of leaves can be seen: the so-called cotyledons. The two cotyledons contain important nutrients to help the little plant grow in the beginning. The cotyledons are round and do not have the shape of a cannabis leaf.

Seedlings prefer a bright, warm (21°C) and humid environment in the first days. They should be placed immediately under fluorescent tubes or ESL (5-10cm distance), but not yet under sodium or mercury vapour lamps (NDL / MH).

When the plantlets have got their second or third pair of jagged leaves, they are usually sufficiently hardy to be placed in direct sun or under a sodium lamp.
In the first few days the plants develop slowly at first and then grow increasingly faster as their root system has grown. 8-10 days after planting, the first serrated pairs of leaves (typical cannabis shape) should appear.

It is recommended to water the small plants carefully (not too much watering or soaking) and not to use any fertiliser in the first few days. The cannabis soil is already pre-fertilised so that the plant can draw necessary nutrients from it first.

If the seedling is in rockwool, fertiliser must be added very lightly from the beginning, as described in the fertilisation scheme, because rockwool does not contain any nutrients and the young plant would otherwise starve. But really only fertilise very lightly during the first few days. If the leaves start to become lighter, this is usually a sign that the plant is not getting enough nutrients, at the latest then you should start fertilising. Fertilise lightly at first, i.e. less concentrated than the fertiliser manufacturer states.

When the plant has developed the 3rd pair of leaves, fertiliser can normally be used when watering. To strengthen the roots, it makes sense, especially in the early stages of the plant, to use a special root stimulator (e.g. Plagron Power Roots, BioRoot Plus from GHE or Hesi Root Complex.....) can be used.
