Companion Plants by 1000Seeds Alfalfa/Lucerne
Alfalfa is a perennial plant that is used as a green manure and for the production of high-quality compost. The plants have small purple flowers and grow up to 3m high. Its root system can spread up to 5m and even break up heavily compacted soil. It fixes nitrogen in the soil and enriches it with iron and magnesium.
Like many legumes, alfalfa as a legume has the ability to absorb nitrogen from the air through nodule bacteria and to supply and bind it to the soil. This makes it very interesting for hobby gardeners, especially for improving soil structure. Nutrient-poor and heavy soils regenerate after green manuring with alfalfa.
The plants can be used to make an excellent compost tea that stimulates the growth of cannabis plants. When composted, alfalfa releases many trace elements, vitamins and calcium into the soil. It also improves the structure of a compost heap and must be sown there by August at the latest.
Afalfa acts as a natural mulch layer, retaining moisture and nutrients in the soil.
